Locally grown difference
Welcome to SBF Flower Company, where decades of expertise unite with a passion for exquisite floral design. We are dedicated to delivering unparalleled quality and personal service in every vibrant bouquet we craft.
Our blooms are grown organically, without the use of pesticides, embodying our commitment to regenerative farming. From nutrient-rich animal manure to companion planting, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.
Each bouquet, arrangement, and wreath is made using seasonal, freshly harvested blooms and greenery. The result? Exceptional quality, vibrant colors, and heavenly scents — a true “field to home” experience. That’s the locally grown difference!
I was recently asked why I started growing flowers. The textbook answer? To bring joy. But if I’m honest, that’s not the whole truth.
I grew up in a family of strong women in Eastern Germany, where flowers were more than just a pastime. My grandmothers planted blooms to bring beauty amid the ashes left by war. My mother found solace and creative freedom in her garden during the confines of Cold War communism. And little me? I longed to spread my wings and quench a thirst for exploration.
Who would have known that what started as a yearlong exchange program in 2000, would turn into a complicated love story (too long to tell here but if you come visit us I might be around to share the whole story). In the end, I left home and my family behind at 21, moving across the globe to the U.S. to fight my own battles—cancer, depression, and eating disorders—all with an insatiable need for joy. Fast forward to today: I’m Mareen Hoens, a 40 something veteran teacher with a doctorate in education (a nod to my dad and grandfather who I dedicated my work too) a mother to two incredible young adults, and wife to an incredible husband who survived being shot in a drive-by shooting in 2016 and no he is not a cop.
That event turned our world upside down, but it also led us to an unexpected form of healing—goats. My husband found therapy in researching them, which inspired our small urban rescue farm. But caring for animals comes with costs, so I began selling flowers at the end of our driveway to help support our family and feed the animals.
And here we are today. For me, growing flowers isn’t just about beauty—it’s about learning, exploring, and giving. Last year, my love for flowers expanded when I started a new chapter, teaching K-6 STEAM. This passion sparked a school garden club, pollinator gardens, and a community program called Petals for Patients, where my farm and school team up to donate flowers to hospice patients.
While my life is now filled with light, I know not everyone’s is. Bringing joy through flowers will always be my fuel.
Thank you, Mareen & the Farm Crew
